How to Set Up Parent-Child Sample Type Relationships

This setup explains how to set up Parent-Child sample type relationships. By doing so, each time a sample is approved, winLIMS will look for the sample type under the "Parent Item Number" and if there are any "Child Item Numbers" found, then a new sample will be automatically created for each of the child item numbers.

1. Open "Parent Child Products" under the <Static Data> menu:

You may see more or less menu items as shown in the screenshot depending on the role that you are assigned too. If the "Parent Child Products" submenu is not shown, contact your winLIMS administrator.

2. Click on the binoculars to retrieve the entire list of current Parent-Child relationships.

3. You can use the "Show Tree" button to see the grouped parent item numbers.

  1. Click on the "Show Tree" button located on the upper left hand side (next to the new button).
  2. If you click on any of the parent items, the right hand side of the screen will refresh showing only the child items related to the parent.

4. You can also use search for a specific item number.

  1. Enter the specific item number that you are looking for (you can use 1 or more of the search boxes shown). You can use the % sign as a wildcard character in any of the search boxes.
  2. Click on the Binocular button to retrieve results.

You cannot edit any of these records on this screen. You can delete an existing record and enter a new record with the updated relationship if needed.

5. To enter a new parent-child item number click on the "new" button.

  1. To avoid any typos, it is strongly suggested to use the direct lookup links for Parent and Child Item Numbers. By doing so, you make sure that you enter an existing sample type and at the same time the Item Description will be filled automatically.
  1. Click on the save button.
  2. Click on the Done button.

6. To delete an existing record (parent-child relationship)

  1. Select the records you wish to delete.
  2. Click on the delete button.

7. To download the parent-child relationships to an excel sheet, use the excel button in winLIMS.
