How to Search in Sample Manager

LIMS offers many different ways to find exactly what you are looking for in the most efficient way possible.  This tutorial offers an overview to a search approach using QBE (Query By Example).  QBE returns detailed drilled down results matching the search criteria.

1. Navigate to Sample Manager

WinLIMS - Home - Mozilla Firefox
WinLIMS - Home - Mozilla Firefox
  1. Click on Main Menu Button
  2. Click on "Sample Life Cycle"
  3. Click on "manage Samples"

2. Using Smart Search Within Sample Manager

WinLIMS - manage Samples (Home>Sample Life Cycle) - Mozilla Firefox
  1. Type search criteria into the smart search text box (you can use: Lot#, Bulk Code, Sample_ID, Customer Ship-To Number)
  2. Click binoculars to execute search
  3. Scroll through search results using left/right arrows

Smart search will look into every cell in the record to see if there is a match.  Sometimes it results in many unnecessary records because you are not able to conduct a search on a particular field.

3. Using Detailed Search Within Sample Manager

Detailed Search allows you to search on any field inside of the manager window, and returns back multiple records that match your criteria.

  1. Populate search criteria into any one of the text boxes within the view (Fill out one or multiple boxes)
  2. Click Binoculars to execute search
  3. Use left and right arrows to scroll through search result

When only partial search criteria is used, encapsulate it with "%" symbol examples shown below.

  • "%" used in front of the search criteria will return all matching results where search criteria text/number is last (Example: %XYZ, will return any matching item where XYZ is the last characters used)
  • "%" used in end of the search criteria will return all matching results where search criteria text/number is first (Example XYZ%, will return any matching item where XYZ is the first characters used)
  • "%" used in the beginning and end will return all matching results where search criteria text/number is the middle (Example %XYZ%, will return any matching item where XYZ is in the middle
  1. Encapsulate search criteria with "%" symbols
  2. Click binoculars to execute search

4. Using Favorite Queries within Manage Samples

Favorite searches can be configured for individual users as well as sites.  For a customized favorite search please talk to a LIMS  administrator.
