Descriptive Specification Set-Up

This tutorial explains how to set up a descriptive specification.  A descriptive specification is a qualitative text field unlike quantitative numeric fields for upper and lowered specification limits we are used to seeing.  Descriptive specs can be used for attribute data types where a technician determines if a test is "Pass"  or "Fail" based on the visual inspection.  Descriptive specs are also often used for color specs, when a test requires to identify color qualitatively.

1.0  Creating a Parameter for Descriptive Specification

1.0  Creating a Parameter for Descriptive Specification

When creating method for a descriptive specification, there are no special requirements or deviations.

It is recommended to set "Dec_Prec" to 0 and Print Flag to either 1 or 0 depending on if you want this parameter to appear in the CoA.

Otherwise follow steps in tutorial "Creating a New Method" at the following link http://limshelp.alent.com/m/admin/l/92315-creating-a-new-method

2.0  Adding New Method to Sample Type

2.0  Adding New Method to Sample Type
  1. Expand the "methods" section in the sample type
  2. Press on add new icon
  3. Type in method name
  4. Press on the Binoculars icon to search for method
  5. Press on the checkbox next to the method you would like to add
  6. Press "Select" button to select the checked method
  7. Press on the "Save" button

3.0  Parameters and Limits Section

In sample type manager expand the "parameters and limits" section

3.1  Set the Demand Field

3.1  Set the Demand Field

For the descriptive spec parameter make sure the set the "DEMAND" field to the result you need the lab technician to enter when logging in a sample.

  1. For example: if the demand field is set to "Blue", laboratory technician will have to type in "Blue" to have a passing result.  Demand field and Result field must match for spec to pass.
  2. When multiple different results are passing they can be entered into the demand field separated by a tilde "~".  For example above, if a laboratory technician types in any of the following into the result field it will pass: Blue, Light Blue, Dark Blue.  They do not need to type in all three, just one of the three

3.2  Set the Requested Result Field (If necessary)

3.2  Set the Requested Result Field (If necessary)

Requested Result field is optional and only used if you do not want the Result text to be listed on CoA, but instead want to display either Pass or Fail

For example when Demand field is set to Blue, and laboratory technician sets the results to Blue spec will pass and CoA will display Pass if Requested Result is set to "Pass".  When Requested Result field is empty, CoA will display the text in the Result on the CoA.

4.0  Save and Approve Sample Type

4.0  Save and Approve Sample Type
  1. Save your settings
  2. Approve SampleType

5.0  Sample Results

5.0  Sample Results

Example 1:

When logging in your sample the laboratory technician must type in results that match the "Demand"

As shown on the screen shot above "Demand" column in the Sample Manager view is changed to "Target Text"

Example 2:

When a laboratory technician types in something that does not match Target Text the cell will be red and not allow for the sample to be approve.
